Welcome to

COMMON STOCK

Today we are going to start with what I would easily consider one of my all time favorite restaurants in San Diego, Common Stock - a modern eatery located in the heart of Hillcrest. Some would say Common Stock is a large reason why I started Patty’s Picks after being asked “Patrick – what is your favorite restaurant in San Diego?” Common Stock is most likely what you would hear from me as an all around top pick. Now here’s why –

  • THE STORY: 8.2/10
In addition to their amazing backgrounds there is a little secret that you will only get to know here at Patty’s Picks – I have kept it until the end, so keep reading!
  • ENVIORNMENT:  8.8/10
The décor has a modern LA chic vibe and is somehow perfectly built both for dates, and the community. The high-tops and booths, built for 2, surround a communal stone bar at the center of the dining room. Its open concept design allows for indoor and outdoor seating. Divided by two open frames, an archway decorated in foliage and white lights; it keeps a constant feeling that all patrons are together in one place. Here’s where it gets lively – their playlist is 10/10. Before I go into detail, I have been to 2 other restaurants and 2 other businesses that literally use this playlist EVERYDAY. Yes, it’s that good! Not only is it curated by Anderson himself, it’s built to get progressively more vibey as the night goes on. So from 11a-11p it will take you on a journey that matches the energy of the entire restaurant.
  • SERVICE : 9.5/10
The service model at Common Stock is unique. Unlike a typical restaurant, Common Stock follows a communal model where all the servers are responsible for the entire restaurant, not just their section. This is extremely beneficial if you have great servers and it just so happens that they do. Justin, Blake, Sara, (CHANGE) to name a few are passionate about what they do and honestly, just love to vibe and have a fucking great time. They are always excited and it's contagious. They know the menu inside and out, have all the recommendations, and can pair drinks with what you are eating. They all share a passion for creating an awesome environment...and if you ask nicely, they just might bring out some warm salted chocolate chip cookies to top off your meal!
  • MENU: 7.6/10
The menu is concise, to the point, and exclusive. With a modern American blend that includes unique items like Curry Hummus and my personal favorite, the Warm Brussels Caesar. The menu does lack a wide variety of options, which can either be a good or a bad thing. With modern American cuisine you typically see a couple more appetizer options, and some form of fish on the menu as well. This makes it difficult to bring along any pescatarians, and I would definitely leave the vegans at home. That being said, it’s clear they are focused on a specialized menu. But in my opinion, the limited menu is something I like because it makes choosing what I want to eat that much easier.
  • FOOD: 10/10
What the menu lacks in diversification, the food makes up for it by being perfect. As I mentioned, I typically look at a small menu as being highly specialized and this is the perfect definition of that. There is not one bad thing on this menu. I've had everything, and I mean everything. Every time, I would be hoping I could find something I didn’t like (so I wouldn’t worry about not ordering it the next time) buttttt I didn’t. Don’t get me wrong, everything about Common Stock is amazing, but what truly in my heart of hearts keeps me coming back is the food.
  • DRINKS 9/10
Now, I know I just raved about the food, but it’s time the drinks had their moment. Actually, I’ll just say re-read the food section and apply it here. There is not one bad drink on the menu. All uniquely crafted and layered with a special twist that you cannot find anywhere else. The reason for the lower rating? Well – the alcohol blends are unique because they don’t have a full liquor license. But trust me, you don’t have to worry about not getting drunk. Additionally, the beer and wine list, though full of options you can’t typically find in many restaurants, is also limited to about 4 options a piece. If you are coming here – don’t waste your time, get a cocktail. PS – It’s also the home of my favorite mixed drink in San Diego.
  • PRICE: 10/10
Another thing you can't beat. The price. All of these menu items at any other restaurant that is even close to Common Stock would be nearly double the price. C’mon – a Rib Eye for $34? Hot Chicken for $18? And let me be very clear – the price is in no way a reflection of the quality. The quality of meats and freshness of the veggies are about as good as they can get without being farm to table. You want to spend under $100 on dinner for 2? You can make that happen.
  • WHEN TO GO & COMPARISONS
When should you come here? First date Repeat date (because everyone will become your best friends & the food is so damn good) Small group dinner When thinking about what is similar – Kettner Exchange – Go here if you are looking for a night out, and more of a scene with a larger variety and focus on the craft drink selection. Encontro North Park – Go here if you want a larger and more diverse menu, and drink but want to sacrifice on food quality and service with typically a longer wait.
  • PATTY'S PICKS
STARTERS Warm Brussels Cesar w/ Hot Chicken on top (My favorite appetizer in San Diego) Curry Hummus & Homemade Pita ENTRÉE’S Burger (double if you’re feeling aggressive) Prime Flat Iron Steak w/ Umami Fries Honorable Mention – Double Hot Chicken Sandwich DRINKS Spicy Margarita (My favorite margarita in San Diego) Mezcal Old-Fashioned DESSERT Warm, melt in your mouth, salted, Chocolate Chip Cookies (Say you came from Patty’s Picks and get some on the house) FUN FACT (+1 to Story) This menu was curated by none other than Sam Deckman, the famous Micheline star chef who is at the helm of Deckman’s – Valle De Guadalupe’s most renowned restaurant. The fact that he’s had his own eyes & taste buds serve as the core of the food and drink offerings it’s truly something unique to Common Stock.
  • THE VERDICT
FINAL SCORE: 9.14 Common Stock is hands-down my favorite go to spot. It checks all of the boxes and out of the 50+ times I have been and I have not once been disappointed. NOT ONCE. Go here – you will not regret it. COMMON STOCK 3805 5th Ave. San Diego, CA 92103 @eatcommonstock *Remember to say you came from Patty's Picks for 5% of your bill!*
